‘Holes’ Reboot TV Series With Gender-Swapped Lead Gets Pilot Order At Disney+

Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a television adaptation of Holes, years after the 2003 Disney movie adaptation starring Shia LaBeouf and Khleo Thomas. Variety first broke the news.

The potential series, also based on the 1998 Louis Sachar novel, would be gender-swapped, having a young teen girl as the lead.

The logline, per Variety, is: In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.

Alina Mankin is writer and executive producer. Liz Phang is the showrunner and executive produces as well. Drew Goddard will executive produce through his Goddard Textiles banner, along with Sarah Esberg. Mike Medavoy is also executive producing, as well as Shamrock, which holds the rights. Goddard Textiles’ Andrea Massaro is a co-executive producer.

Walden Media, which produced the film, is also on board. They have been trying to get a series version of the book in development for a while, Variety noted. Disney’s 20th Television, where Goddard has a deal, is the studio.

The book and original film focused on the protagonist Stanley Yelnats, who is sent to detention camp for a crime he didn’t commit. He has to spend each day digging holes at Camp Green Lake, and soon learns of his family’s connection to the camp.

The film also starred Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, Dulé Hill, and Eartha Kitt.
